Youth Programming

'Voice is power. Voice is literary. Voice is votes. Voice is entrepreneurship. That’s our focus, our focus is on literacy. For Authoring Action, we define literacy as more than your ability to read and write - We define literacy as your ability to read and write on a level that you can negotiate your dreams to come true' - Nathan Ross Freeman

Youth Summer Intensive Program

The 2017 Summer program will run June 26 - July 29

Interviews for student participants have started, please email for more details and to schedule an interview.

Our Summer Intensive is a 5 week opportunity for youth learn Authoring Action's creative writing process, work collaboratively with professional artists, their peers and mentors to sharpen skills in self expression and prepare their writing for the commencement production marking the end of the summer intensive.

Youth who successfully complete the Summer Intensive Program will continue expanding their writing skills through our Tuesday and Thursday workshops after school.

Advanced Writing Workshops

Beginning with the Summer Intensive, teens continue to develop strong skills in creative writing, spoken word and film through participation in our Year-Round Advanced Writing Workshops - held two days a week during the school year. Throughout the year-round program, authors work to find their voices as they write to various social topics.

As much as the writing process is about self-discovery, it is also about collaboration. Teens share their ideas and inspiration in a group setting and provide constructive criticism to one another. Teens in the year-round program become a close knit, supportive and creative team.

Outreach Ensemble

Outreach Ensemble members engage audiences through stage presentations of original written works that speak to pressing community concerns. Authoring Action youth must attend the Summer Intensive Program before becoming part of the Outreach Ensemble.

The Outreach Ensemble covers a wide variety of topics when they engage audiences including race, gender, transformation, community, civil rights, art and freedom. The ensemble learns to work together as a team and to share their writing through spoken word, enhancing their public speaking skills and stage presence.
