More About the Authoring Action Program
A modern day rite of passage... Authoring Action's core program promotes:
- Engaged learning in a nurturing, nontraditional and safe environment
- Enhanced self awareness, understanding and esteem
- Personal and social responsibility and leadership
- Creativity and enhanced communications skills
- Cross-cultural understanding and exchange
A Commitment to Self, the Process and Society
A successful Authoring Action experience requires commitment on the part of youth and their parents or guardians. As such, youth are provided the opportunity to “earn and learn” through a small stipend based on adherence to program guidelines. The program is offered free of charge to qualifying applicants; however, families in a position to do so are encouraged to make a tax-deductible donation in support of Authoring Action’s mission in service to youth and community.
Successful applicants to the program:
- Have an interest in writing, self-expression and positive change for self and the greater community
- Strive to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Work well with others
- Commit to attending both Summer and on-going Intensive Writing programs and participating in Assegai Outreach Ensemble engagements
- Can provide their own transportation during the school year (Free bus passes are available for the summer program)
It is strongly recommended that youth go through Summer Institute prior to participating in Writing Intensive After School Sessions and the Assegai Outreach Ensemble. However, exceptions may be made at the discretion of the Executive and Artistic Directors.
Youth who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to their personal development and program outreach goals are offered the opportunity to continue in the program as peer mentors following two or more years of participation in the program. Authoring Action also offers a number of paid summer employment opportunities to program graduates who have graduated high school.
