Speaking of elephants. How ‘bout, caverns, sink holes, that abyss in the room. The abyss our teens fall through by the minute educationally, vocationally, their health, deviant sexual behavior, then slash epidemic and, of course, drugs.

Do You Remember: Learning How to Read and Write

What do you remember? Was it the trying to pronounce “W” in  the alphabet.  Consonant diagraphs, ‘th’s” or consonant ‘bl’ends.  The voice of your patient father, mother, your impatient brother, sister breaking down words, you repeating each syllable, with twist of tongue … eagerness.

Every educator tells every student that literacy is important, because a life without literacy is hardly a life at all. Honestly, I don’t view literacy in the same manner. I view literacy as power. It’s a cliché to say “Knowledge is power.”  I think it’s true.

Literacy Is Voice

Literacy is an agent that carries the tools to your ultimate success. It opens many doors. Opportunities are presented to you. It increases your chances of excelling in whatever it is you do. Without the ability to read and write, how can you teach? How can you communicate? The things you should enjoy become a challenge. Most of what you could enjoy, is thrown away.

What Did You Like About Learning To Read And Write

 When do they stop exploding to their feet, raising their hands ... even when they don't have the answer? When do they think better than to expose themselves to the embarrassment of ... asking ... a question to make sure they are right on how to spell "pictire".  Why do our children suddenly, somewhere around, between 6th and 7th grade begin to implode, hide from wanting to know, slunk in a cave of, 'whatever.'

I remember when I first learned to read, I was so excited that I read everything I could get my hands on, but today it seems as if literacy has become a four letter word that we’re not allowed to say in front of guests, a taboo. Why has something that once was looked on as the highest accomplishment of our 4-6 year life has become so minuscule? Is it that it’s something to be expected from us? Or is it not important anymore?
